Methods used and the consequences:

Right now, millions of mice, rats, rabbits, primates, cats, dogs, and other animals are locked inside barren cages in laboratories. They languish in pain, suffer from extreme frustration, ache with loneliness, and long to be free. Instead, all they can do is sit and wait in fear of the next terrifying and painful procedure that will be performed on them. The stress of their living situation cause some animals to develop neurotic types of behavior such as incessantly spinning in circles, rocking back and forth, pulling out their own fur, and even biting themselves. After enduring a life of pain, loneliness, and terror, almost all of them will be killed.

U.S. law allows animals to be burned, shocked, poisoned, isolated, starved, drowned, addicted to drugs, and brain-damaged. No experiment, no matter how painful or trivial, is prohibited – and pain-killers are not required. Even when alternatives to the use of animals are available, the law does not require that they be used—and often they aren’t. Animals are infected with diseases that they would never normally contract, tiny mice grow tumors as large as their own bodies, kittens are purposely blinded, rats are made to suffer seizures, and primates’ skulls are cut open and electrodes are implanted in them. Experimenters force-feed chemicals to animals, conduct repeated surgeries on them, implant wires in their brains, crush their spines, and much more. After enduring these terrifying, painful procedures, animals are then usually dumped back into a cage without any painkillers.

How to solve the problem:

Here are some methods that can be used instead of animal testing.

All the information is collected from: http://www.peta.org/issues/animals-used-for-experimentation/alternatives-animal-testing/

Human cells:

Organs on chip – human cells that are grown to mimic the structure and function of human organs and organ systems. Can be used instead of animals when doing disease research, drug testing and toxicity testing.

A variety of cell-based tests and models made from tissue, which can be used when testing the safety of drugs, chemicals, cosmetics

Computer modeling:

Computer models can simulate human biology and the progression of developing diseases. These can predict the ways new drugs will react to the human body

Other computer-based techniques can predict the likelihood of causing hazard, based on similarities to already existing substances and information about human biology

Human volunteers:

Microdosing – humans are given a small one-time drug dose, and techniques are then used to see how the drug behaves in the body.

fMRI – techniques allow the human brain to be safely studied on a very detailed level

What you can do to make a difference:

You can show your support by signing our petition and watch out from buying products tested on animals. You can look for badges on the packaging of the products, to see if they are not tested on animals. You can also download the app “Dyretestet?” on the app store or google play.
