As UNISA students, we face unique challenges that are often overlooked due to the nature of our online studies. Despite our commitment and hard work, we are subjected to systemic inequities in funding, allowances, and support services. The current state of affairs is unsustainable and unjust.
UNISA students funded by NSFAS receive a Learning Materials Allowance (LMA) of R700 per module for the first four modules, totaling R2,800. For five or more modules, a one-time payment of R5,460 is provided. However, this allowance is intended to cover textbooks and study materials, not additional expenses such as data or living costs. Moreover, the incidental allowance of R304.50 per month is only available to students registered for ten or more modules, a requirement that many students cannot meet due to personal or academic constraints.
Access to reliable internet is essential for online learning. However, UNISA has announced that it will not be providing data for the months of August and September 2025. This decision disproportionately affects NSFAS-funded students, who rely on this support to access learning materials and submit assignments.
Unisa
Students have expressed their frustrations on social media platforms, highlighting the challenges of studying without adequate data support. One student remarked, "While we're stressed about paying Unisa from our own pocket, now we also have to buy data ourselves.
The current allowances are insufficient to cover the basic needs of students. The R304.50 monthly living allowance is inadequate for daily expenses, and the lack of data provision further exacerbates financial strain. Students have reported receiving demand letters for outstanding fees, despite the financial challenges they face.
We, the undersigned UNISA students, are unable to continue our studies because our fees, allowances, and data have not been paid. We demand equitable treatment, adequate funding, and reliable support services to ensure our succes
