Dear Mayor Mahan,

We are writing to bring to your attention a serious and ongoing issue affecting the quality of life and safety in our neighborhood on Lenn Drive, Whispering Willow, Dry Creek Village, Atria and Gaton Drive . For several months now, our community has been experiencing a persistent problem with recreational vehicles (RVs) and large commercial vehicles parking for extended periods. Additionally, there are numerous cars in which people are living parked all around the Willow Glen Post Office.

Despite our numerous complaints to 311, the resolution provided has been temporary at best. The RVs and other vehicles are removed for a short period, only to return shortly thereafter. This recurring situation is causing considerable distress and discomfort to the residents of our neighborhood for several reasons:

  1. Litter and Lack of Cleanliness: The areas around these parked RVs and vehicles are often littered with trash and debris. This not only detracts from the aesthetic appeal of our neighborhood but also poses health risks due to potential pests and unsanitary conditions.
  2. Hazardous Walking Conditions: There are over 800 senior residents in the Atria and Dry Creek Village residential units. Walking has become hazardous due to belongings blocking the sidewalks. This is particularly dangerous for our senior population, who rely on clear pathways for their daily activities and exercise.
  3. Hazardous Driving Conditions: Driving has become extremely hazardous due to the large vehicles blocking the sight lines of the driveways to the post office as well as the Dry Creek shopping center. This situation creates a significant risk for accidents, endangering both drivers and pedestrians.
  4. Safety Concerns: The presence of these vehicles and the individuals living in them creates an environment where residents, particularly children, feel unsafe. There have been instances of suspicious activities and disturbances, further exacerbating our concerns.
  5. Impact on Neighborhood Quality of Life: The constant presence of these vehicles disrupts the peaceful environment of our neighborhood. It also affects the availability of parking spaces for residents and visitors, leading to additional inconvenience.

We understand that housing and homelessness are complex issues, and we are compassionate towards those affected. However, the current situation is untenable and requires a more effective and permanent solution. We urge the city to take the following actions:

  1. Enhanced Enforcement: Implement stricter and more consistent enforcement of parking regulations in our neighborhood, particularly around the Willow Glen Post Office and Lenn Drive.
  2. Curb Painting and Signage: Consider painting the curbs a different color to designate specific areas for short-term parking only, allowing vehicles to stop and use the mailboxes for drop-offs without obstructing sight lines and creating hazards.
  3. Sanitation Measures: Increase the frequency of sanitation services in areas affected by illegal parking and living situations to maintain cleanliness and hygiene.
  4. Community Engagement: Establish a direct line of communication between the city officials and our neighborhood residents to address ongoing concerns and provide updates on the actions being taken.

We believe that with your leadership and the city’s resources, a sustainable and humane solution can be found that addresses both the needs of our community and those of the individuals living in vehicles. We kindly request your immediate attention to this matter and look forward to your response.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
