To: U.S. Embassy, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
We, concerned citizens of Ethiopia and the international community, urgently call upon the U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia to intervene and safeguard the life of Mr. Christian Tadele Tsegay, a public elected Member of Parliament and representative of the Amhara people.
Christian Tadele has been illegally detained by the regime of Abiy Ahmed for no crime other than being a strong voice for the protection of human rights. He recently underwent a major surgical operation, but was forcibly removed from hospital by police and denied critical post-operative medical care. His condition is now life-threatening.
This act is a blatant violation of international human rights law and specifically breaches the UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners (Nelson Mandela Rules, Rule 27) which guarantee:
1. Immediate access to urgent medical care.
2.Specialized treatment in hospitals when needed.
3. Independent medical decision-making free from political interference.
By denying Christian Tadele the right to life-saving treatment for immediate post operation complications from a major surgery done for him, the Ethiopian government is committing an egregious violation of human rights and international law.
We, the undersigned, demand that the U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia urgently intervene to:
1. Secure immediate medical care and hospitalization for Christian Tadele.
2. Hold the Ethiopian government accountable for violations of human rights.
3. Stand with the people of Amhara and all Ethiopians who seek justice and dignity.
The U.S. Embassy has a moral and historic responsibility to act when innocent lives are at stake. Christian Tadele’s life must be saved.
