Senator Wyden, as Oregonians affected by psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, we are respectfully requesting that you champion the restoration of funding for psoriasis research at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
In Fiscal Year 2010, Congress appropriated $1.5 million to the CDC to begin research on psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. With these funds, CDC was able to begin an extensive research process over two years that has culminated in a psoriasis public health agenda that, if implemented, will: increase understanding of psoriasis, examine the relationship of psoriasis to other serious diseases, develop public health strategies to reduce the burden of diseases and prevent the onset of co-morbid conditions, and gain insight into the long-term impact of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.
You have always supported the psoriasis community and we are so grateful to count you among our friends on Capitol Hill. We feel that without further funding, the program will not continue at the CDC and the original $1.5 million will be squandered. We hope that you and your Senate colleague, Sen. Merkley, will consider taking the lead on restoring the funding for psoriasis research at the CDC.
