Urge ERAU DB Admin to Provide a Detailed Response Following the 02/17-18/2026 Campus Shutdown
TLDR; We are not asking the university for more details regarding the actual crime that took place. We understand that the investigation into that is ongoing. We are asking for transparency regarding ERAU emergency preparedness and response procedures and how they plan to address flaws and improve following this incident.
We deserve to feel safe on campus. We deserve an administration that affirms its priority for our health and safety, mental and physical. Students across campus feel disappointed by the response from the university following the threat of violence and campus lock down the night of Tuesday, February 17th, 2026. The lack of a proper statement addressing our growing concerns left tensions high the following day, causing undue stress and worry which likely contributed to the chaos and false alarm later in the evening on Wednesday, February 18th, 2026.
Out of respect for their students, faculty, and staff, we ask Embry-Riddle to release a detailed statement on their current emergency preparedness and explaining how they plan to work internally and with the Volusia County Sheriffs Office/Daytona Beach Police to improve the emergency preparedness of the Daytona Beach Campus. Additionally, an open-to-campus town hall style meeting with Campus Safety & Administration to address concerns would not be unreasonable. In fact, it would show a great deal of support for the concerns and well-being of the student body.
We ask to be told the following;
- Does Embry-Riddle have a rapid response plan in place with the Volusia County Sheriffs Office/Daytona Beach Police in the event of an active threat/shooting?
- Does Embry-Riddle have a documented Standard Operating Procedure for the event of an active threat/shooting?
- Does Embry-Riddle have a system in place to ensure police are able to enter and exit buildings immediately should an active threat/shooting take place during locked/key-card only hours?
- Does Embry-Riddle allow and provide ample time for the Volusia County Sheriffs Office/Daytona Beach Police to train on campus to prepare for the possibility of an active threat/shooting?
The Student Union building is wide, open, and many study/conference rooms are locked after hours. The Student Union is not, generally, a safe place to be in the event of an active threat/shooting.
- Does Embry-Riddle have a plan of recommended action for students, faculty, and staff in the Union in the event of an active threat/shooting? If not, will one be developed?
- How does/will Embry-Riddle ensure campus-wide understanding and awareness of this plan?
RAVE currently serves as the universities primary Emergency Alert System.Many students only discovered this AFTER the incident on 02/17. Furthermore, some people discovered the app to not be working on their phone at all despite being downloaded and set up.
- Is Embry-Riddle doing any form of investigating/auditing to ensure that students, faculty, and staff are signed up for the RAVE EAS before classes begin?
- Does Embry-Riddle plan to investigate the technical issues experienced with RAVE on 02/17 to better ensure the EAS effectiveness in the future?
We ask to be provided with the following;
- A statement of Embry-Riddle's intent to investigate and amend their Standard Operating Procedures for the event of an active threat/shooting following the incident on February 17th, 2026.
Embry-Riddle encourages it's students to stand for truth, justice, and innovation. This petition comes from that place, a place of love for our university and hope for it's future. We are proud to be Eagles.
