We urge the city council to strike down the ban on backyard chickens in Muncie. We believe that allowing backyard chicken keeping is a small, but meaningful step toward enhancing the local food economy through improved diet choices, better use of available urban space, and allowing increased productive activity at the household level.
Many municipalities are overturning their unnecessary ordinances that outlaw city chicken keeping and instituting new rules that allow and limit chicken keeping. The four largest cities in the country, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston, and major regional cities like Indianapolis, Cleveland, Toledo, St. Louis, Evansville, and Bloomington allow backyard chicken keeping.
We propose a new ordinance that limits the number of chickens per household to 8, keeps the ban on roosters, and mandates that coops be at least 20 feet from buildings on adjacent properties.

I have been in correspondence with members of the city council to discuss the specifics of a potential pilot program. The interest in this proposal remains steady as we continue to gather feedback from residents across the city.

We have had chickens for years!! We share the eggs with our neighbors and family!! We keep are chicken well feed and water. They have a run and are in a complete fenced in coupe! Our grandkids love feeding them fresh food out of the gardens!! We have a neighbor the uses the poop in her garden because she grows naturally!! So our chickens do more then just feed us they feed everyone and help grow more food too!!!
I am very concerned about where my food comes from and how it is grown / raised. Backyard chickens would allow me to better to control my family’s food choices.
Covid-19 has brought about a shortage of food for my family and keeping a small number of chickens in a clean, well kept environment, not roaming amongst my neighbors yards is important to us.
Large industries that keep hens to produce eggs are one of the worst industries for animal welfare. With backyard chickens being legal, Muncie would be allowing citizens to choose to have eggs with a more ethical background.
I was looking into getting four chickens and didn't know that I wasn't allowed to have them until the article in the paper. I will see you at the meeting!
Why would you ban folks from self sustenance.
Let people have backyard chickens, We can grow our own food let us have our own fresh eggs.

My momma have some in her back yard and she gets a lot of eggs out of them and it saves on money for many in the family......
We have had chickens for years!! We share the eggs with our neighbors and family!! We keep are chicken well feed and water. They have a run and are in a complete fenced in coupe!
