This petition is for parents to vote on the year-round school calendar for UPSM schools. An email was sent recently which stated that UPSM will follow the traditional calendar along with UPA. Some parents never received an email to vote on the calendar change and were surprised by the results. We hope this petition can be shown at the Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 to show that majority of us want the non-traditional school calendar.

I believe the non traditional calendar have the students a better retention rate of the lessons learned throughout the year, which in turn gives greater confidence for themselves. It also allowed the patents to see the growth in our children, knowing that their education choice was not in vain. UPSM may be a part of UPS district, however UPSM was named differently, given different curriculum, and initially had a different schedule all for a purpose. Parents who agreed with all of that enrolled their kids with that same concept. Changing the calendar to mimic our sister schools, takes away our uniqueness.
I chose this school based on reputation from friends and family and was fully aware of the schools calendar year. I find that my child works better with a year round calendar. Now I will be forced to have him switch schools and find one with a year round calendar and that's unstable.
We were told at the opening of the elementary school 3 years ago that the balanced calendar would be the standard for UPrep. Very disappointed. This balanced calendar is a rare jewel in the city of Detroit / Wayne County and should not be lost.
If we wanted a traditional schedule we would have chosen a school with one. I bet Noone thought to ask the students what they want. My 2 students are not happy with the decision. They said, " if they want UPA just change our (UPSM High) name too."
I want my children going to a school that is year round. I left a DPS school because of what i learned about the school. Since coming here i see the vast difference it makes in retaining information from one grade to another. As a mother of 2 black young men I am raising Success stories not statistics.
I prefer the year-round calendar
My child is new to this school and seems to like it as it is now. We do not want a change to the calendar. I really don't want to change his school again.

Non traditional calendar will bring more instructional content into the classroom. The student/pupil ratio is 1/26 in some of the UPSM classrooms. More instruction is needed before assessment testing begins in September. Its not fair for the students or the teacher to have anything less.
