১৯৫২ সালের ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারী তারিখে মাতৃভাষার মর্যাদা রক্ষার দাবিতে অনেকগুলো তরুণ প্রাণ বিসর্জিত করেছিলো একটি জনগোষ্ঠী। ভাষার জন্য ঐ আন্দোলনই পরবর্তীতে একটি জাতিমুক্তির আন্দোলনের প্রেক্ষাপট রচনা করেছিলো এবং ১৯৭১ সালের ১৬ ডিসেম্বর মুক্তিযুদ্ধের মাধ্যমে জাতিটি উপনিবেশিক শৃঙ্খল থেকে স্বাধীনতা লাভ করে। ভাষাটি বাংলাভাষা, আর স্বাধীন জাতিরাষ্ট্রটি হলো বাংলাদেশ। ভাষার জন্য প্রাণ দেয়া এই জাতির ভাষাকে স্বীকৃতি দিতেই ইউনেস্কো ২০০০ সালে ২১ ফেব্রুয়ারী তারিখটিকে আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবসের স্বীকৃতি দান করে যা অত্যন্ত যৌক্তিক একটি সিদ্ধান্ত ছিলো।
কিন্তু গোটা বিশ্বে প্রায় ২৫০ মিলিয়ন মানুষ বাংলাভাষায় কথা বললেও এবং ভাষাভাষি জনগোষ্ঠীর দিক থেকে এই ভাষার অবস্থান ৪র্থ (কারও কারও মতে ৫ম কিংবা ৬ষ্ঠ) হলেও জাতিসংঘের দাপ্তরিক ভাষা হিসেবে এই ভাষার স্বীকৃতি মেলেনি আজও। বাংলাদেশ ছাড়াও পশ্চিমবঙ্গ, আসাম, ত্রিপুরার মানুষ বাংলায় কথা বলে। বাংলায় কথা বলে ঝাড়খণ্ড-বিহার-অন্ধপ্রদেশ-মহারাষ্ট্রের মানুষ। বৃটেন, মধ্যপ্রাচ্য-দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার বিভিন্ন দেশে থাকা প্রবাসীদেরও মাতৃভাষা বাংলা। জাতিসংঘের শান্তিরক্ষী মিশনের পক্ষে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অবদান রাখবার জন্য সিয়েরালিয়ন বাংলাভাষার প্রতি সম্মান জানিয়ে ভাষাটিকে তাদের দ্বিতীয় ভাষার মর্যাদা দিয়েছে।
একটি স্বাধীন জাতিরাষ্ট্র প্রতিষ্ঠার অঙ্কুর রচিত হয়েছিলো যে ভাষার জন্য আন্দোলনের মাঝ দিয়ে, রাজপথ রঞ্জিত হয়েছিলো তারুণ্যের তাজা রক্তে, সেই ভাষাকে দাপ্তরিক ভাষার স্বীকৃতি না দিলে জাতিসংঘ অন্যায্য হয়ে পড়ে। তাই জাতিসংঘের ৭ম দাপ্তরিক ভাষা হিসেবে বাংলাভাষাকে স্বীকৃতি দেবার জোর দাবি জানাচ্ছি-
Dear Secretary-General,
It is to inform your highness that in the 21st February of 1952 some young people, especially students, sacrificed their invaluable lives for a demand of dignity for their mother tongue. That movement for the dignity of their mother tongue, later on, paved the way for a nation's independence. In the 16th December of 1971 that nation came to its independence after a life-and-soul fight with the colonial bondage. The language, mentioned here, is Bangla; and the independent nation is Bangladesh. To recognize the achievement of the sacrificed souls UNESCO has declared 21st February as the 'International Mother Language Day'. Undoubtedly, this recognition is highly logical.
But it is a matter of sorrow to say that even when 250 million people speak this language (which means that it holds 4th position among living languages) it has not been recognized as an official language in and by the United Nations. Besides Bangladeshis, people from West Bengal, Asam, Tripura, Bihar, Moharastro, Jharkhondo speak this language. Even there are a large number of non-asian people who speak it. Literature in this language has also received Nobel prize.
The honour of the United Nations comes to be questioned if it does not give recognition to the language as it's 7th official language which set off the independence of a nation with a sacrifice of warm and red blood of young students. Therefore, we request your highness to recognize Bangla language as the 7th official language of the United Nations.

The climb toward one hundred signatures is slow and the silence from the decision makers is heavy. We need to push through this fatigue to get our message in front of those who keep ignoring us.

FINALLY. Why is this taking so long? It is such a widely spoken language globally.
Proud of my mother tongue. So many people have sacrificed so much for this language. Please make it official!
Total respect to all those who gave their lives in 1952. Recognition is the absolute minimum we should expect.
UN needs to recognize the reality. Bangla speakers are everywhere now. Do the right thing.
About time. Bangla is spoken by so many people around the world. It deserves to be an official language of the UN.
