Northeast MN needs good paying jobs, tourism is not enough. I was the HR manager for a call center in Ely- we had about 90 employees, with an average wage of about $17/hr. Many of my employees worked there as well as at a business that depended on tourism- and they wouldn’t have ever been able to survive economically with just their job in tourism. In addition, if we really want to do what’s best for the environment - we should be mining all these precious metals here in our backyard where we have some of the toughest environmental regulations and labor regulations- not with child labor in Congo with no environmental regulations.

Safe and responsible miners, government oversight, along with vigilant area residents will all work to ensure the environmental stewardship necessary to maintain our natural wonderland while producing the metals needed for our national economy and defense.

Mining is an anchor industry. It operates 24/7/365 with several hundred high paying jobs and thousands more jobs in tier 1 satellite industries. Modern mining is technically sound and loaded with redundant, safety fire walls. There are 3,700 active dams in global mining; six have failed in the last six years- none in the US. You owe it, governor, to listen equally to both arguments. The last Ely mine closed in 66’ and tourism has been our soul source of income- Ely is dying and the new census next year will bare that out.

I've lived in Ely for over 70 years, and have watched the town go from a vibrant economy in the 50s, into the early 60s to what it has become-a ghost town in the making. The two latest victims are the closure of Shopko and the Dollar General store. Many older buildings in Ely have been recently remodeled, and are beautiful. So in the defense of them, I will say that Ely has the best looking empty buildings in the state.

It is long past time for copper nickel mining to take its place as the new era of responsible mining in Northeast Minnesota. Twin Metals will bring good paying jobs to an area in economical distress. We must support them in order for communities like Ely to survive going forward.

I have followed the PolyMet project since 2005. They have done their due diligence and received their permits with Commissioner Landwehr’s approval that copper mining can be done without acid mining drainage. We all want to protect our environment and water. We can mine safely.

Ely, MN is originally a mining town- where I was born & raised. My grandfather, Niilo Tuomela, worked at the Pioneer Mine for many years! The laws/rules were A LOT different back then, and not only did we ‘survive ‘ but Ely prospered!
