Academic freedom is not an excuse for being racist in front of students. Unbelievable that the uni is trying to sweep this under the rug.

Black ppl shouldn’t have to change who they are to make those around them feel comfortable. This word has such a negative context to it when it’s used by races that aren’t black. It’s 2019 this shouldn't even have to be a problem but it is.

Please stop the racism.

I belong to this classroom. And I feel the classroom is our safe place where we can get into deep conversations about sensitive topics and learn. Our history is full of horrible events that humans have created. In no way did she use the word in a derogatory way; nor did she give us permission to use the word verbally or written. She made it very clear the word was not okay and only used for educational purposes. We have a large class as well and I know many of us do not feel the same way and are grateful to get this opportunity to learn historical topics that are not spoken about. It is pretty bold of you to assume that such a big portion of the class is offended when you dont even know 10% of our names. I am very happy to have the opportunity to have such a diverse classroom as every background is beautiful. I hope nobody takes offense to any lessons in any classes where we are approaching sensitive topics, and to not go out of the classroom and reuse these words out of class. University is to learn and to find deeper meaning and have deeper conversations. Teachers are there doing their jobs. If they are using words in deragotory ways or preaching against any culture, then of course voice yourself. Thanks for letting me voice myself and others that agree.

The Freedom Act that is meant to “protect” professors and allow them to discuss sensitive topics in the classroom is not a pass to invalidate students’ feelings when they bring up an issue about a professor. A student being uncomfortable about the topic of racism is one thing, and does not hold the same weight when a student brings awareness that the use of derogatory slurs makes them uncomfortable. Students do not pay money to enter a classroom that clearly do not respect students of colour. The professor’s job and University of Calgary’s job is to foster a safe space for students to learn, how could you possibly expect that when student concerns are invalidated and professor’s are excused under “The Freedom Act” and are clearly free to make any statements they want to on the basis of “academic/intellectual discourse”. If you are a student at University of Calgary and have experienced professors abusing their authority and using derogatory slurs and have tried to bring it to awareness as to why they should not be perpetuating the oppressor’s language and we’re not met with attempts of reconciliation or even a simple acknowledgement of student’s feelings, I urge you to write to the SU, to the school, to anyone who will listen. I urge you to speak up and make sure that institutions (in the 21st century nonetheless) realize their impact on the future. Start holding your educators accountable. What was asked was a simple apology and the refusal of providing one marks a privilege unchecked.
