The new University of North Texas President, Neal Smatresk, is changing graduation ceremonies starting May 2015. The format to be had is now a single university wide commencement at the Apogee Stadium where graduates will not only be unable to walk the stage, but they will be seated and be recognized according to degree plan, not college (i.e. Doctoral, Master's, Bachelor). The only time our names are to be called is at a "College Recognition Ceremony" held at different times and venues throughout campus. Due to this once a year ceremony, future graduates achieving their goals in the Summer and Winter semesters will be forced to wait until May to walk the stage. UNT is asking us, and our families, to attend an extra unnecessary event in order to achieve the full graduation experience. Sign this petition to keep the oldie, but goodie, way of celebrating our academic success. We all deserve to graduate next to the people we worked so hard with, at the Coliseum, the way it's always been.
Seeing one hundred people put their name behind this gives me such a boost. I still remember sitting in the Coliseum for my first orientation and knowing that space is where I belong for my big day. We deserve to keep our traditions alive.

Seeing this progress makes me realize how many of us feel that same sting of losing our traditional walk at the Coliseum. Your stories about the hard work required to earn that moment on stage are the heartbeat of this effort.

I was a December grad 4 years ago, and I woukd have hated the fact that i would have to wait a whole semester to be recognized. Come on UNT, don't change to 1 ceremony JUST so it can held in apogee.

Why change something that has worked! This graduation ceremony is a tradition in my family and I would like to keep it that way! Plus in May outside?? Remember it is Texas and could be 100+ degrees!

I have never been so upset, I feel like I have wasted the past 4 years of my life. All I wanted is for my family to see me walk across that stage and now all my family that is flying and driving in doesn't get that anymore. What a way for me to spend my finals week. So ashamed of UNT.

Nothing turns a college into a degree mill like treating students like they don't matter. Bring back individual ceremonies, UNT. Treat your students like humans! For all the money we spend to attend classes, give us something back.

UNT's contract with me, my daughter and my grand daughter in 2015 includes individual recognition at graduation ceremony. Anything less is a breach of contract according to the contract law course I took in '57.

I've worked so hard to graduate. To not be able to walk across the stage for graduation is almost insulting. I spent 4 years at this university. The least I could get is the two hours it takes for my college to be called. College of Arts and Sciences is one of the biggest and the last one I attended took 2 hours top.

Can we please add to this that no one wants to wear a green cap and gown!!! They mad all these changes without polling the students. What about what we want and what we paid our money for?
