What?????????? Shut down The Criterion? As a former Editor-in-Chief of said publication, I am appalled and outraged. Why would I let my daughter attend such university (she's in 6th grade but already committed to attending LSU)? Freedom of speech is freedom of speech whether it fits the paradigm or doesn't. A student run newspaper should have more liberties, especially when its mission is to inform the student body and engage in crucial conversations. Out of this whole scandal, I am disappointed the most by censorship, as if young adults aren't capable of or don't deserve to openly discuss what is important to them. This is antithetical to education.

Someone I was once close with was raped by a student of the university. Stricter guidelines and punishments must be enacted for the sake of the students and victims alike.

Dr. Randal Wisbey,
in your response you said " However, La Sierra University ethically and legally cannot and will not engage in a point-by-point response about a situation concerning students at this school. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) prevents us from doing so, now or in the future.". Randal, I'm confused, this petition is not asking you to disclose any information that is personally identifiable, so i don't believe FERPA applies, if it does apply you need to be specific as to how it does, otherwise it sounds like your simply using FERPA as an excuse. Further more ethically you MUST discuss this issue, you owe your students, faculty and staff a safe campus, and simply saying we will not discuss this is sending a LOUD message you could care less about the safety of your students on your campus.

As a former employee of La Sierra i have experienced first hand the suppression of information and dismissive attitudes towards human rights and respect for each other, Its time for La Sierra to be transparent and this issues is NOT an FERPA issue, its a human rights issue. we can rise above but i can no longer remain silent regarding this. This issue is much larger than Sexual Misconduct, I have warned the board before regarding this behavior, its shameful the university has yet to address basic human rights on campus.

I am aware that this has gone on to destroy women not only since my freshman year in 1969, but much earlier when I heard women's experiences from the 50's whose careers and future lives were destroyed by sexual violence from well respected, honored professors.
