This is a petition to have the bathroom doors of Eigenmann residence hall UNLOCKED. The reasons given are poor at best. One reason we are given is "ventilation," we are not asking for the doors to be propped open, or left open, just UNLOCKED. Locked or UNLOCKED will not have any bearing on the ventilation at all. Secondly, we are told it is a security issue. I quote a resident manager, "we lock the upper floors because we want to make sure that guests and/or administrative staff are not able to use them as they do not pay to live here." On floors 12-14 resident keys are needed to access the hallways. On floors 2-11 you need a resident key to access the elevators as they do not have doors restricting access to the hallways. Anyone with access to the hallway has access to the bathrooms. Administrative staff do not have access to the hallways. The hallways are locked; therefore locking the bathrooms is redundant. Further, guests are theoretically supposed to be escorted by residents, and are there by permission; therefore guests have the same access to facilities as their hosts. Therefore, locking the bathrooms is pointless. This is the same as someone living in a suburb locking their bathroom door because someone walking down the street may come in and vandalize their bathroom. Does anyone do this If you do not have a resident key, you do not have access to the resident bathrooms. Locking the resident bathroom doors places an undue and unwanted inconvenience on the residents who pay to live here every day.
