Kyrene community — our school playgrounds, basketball courts and fields shouldn’t sit empty behind locked gates. Many in the district remember when these spaces were open after hours. They brought neighbors together, gave kids a safe place to play, and helped build a real sense of community.

I’m a parent of two Kyrene students. From my driveway I look out at school fields we aren’t allowed to use. Neighbors still talk about how much these spaces meant to them. As a transplant from the Midwest, I’ve found it hard to meet people when everyone is tucked away behind tall backyard walls — and when community spaces like our school grounds are closed to the public it only contributes to this isolation that is unique to Arizona.

Schools across the country keep their outdoor areas open after hours. These spaces are funded by taxpayers and should be enjoyed by the community when school isn’t in session.

Kyrene is going through major changes with school closures. Unlocking the gates is an easy, low‑cost step that would strengthen community, support health, and give everyone a place to gather.

If you want our school grounds open after hours, please sign and tell the school board it’s time to bring back accessible community spaces. I will personally take this petition to an upcoming Kyrene School Board meeting and speak on behalf of our community. Together, we can show the board how much this matters to the families, neighbors, and residents of Kyrene.
