The San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed ordinance 100233 in 2010 otherwise known as “Prohibition on sitting or lying on public sidewalks”, though it is well known that the city is a relative safe haven to many without a home. The homeless are discriminated against almost everywhere they go, and adding pointless laws to victimize them further hurts far more than it helps. Taking away a civil liberty as basic as resting on a sidewalk for the supposed purpose of “maintaining pedestrian and commercial traffic” is not only unjustified but unnecessary. People were freely able to walk the sidewalks of this city before the ordinance was even implemented; the only thing that changed is the number of law enforcement officers having to deal with tired people resting on a sidewalk because they have nowhere else to do so. This ordinance is directed toward a population of people who are more in need of decent treatment than anyone; a population many of whom once owned property in San Francisco before the recession hit. By repealing this act the city of San Francisco will be kinder and more tolerant of a population that has historically considered it the one home that they have.
