The undersigned members of the University of Maryland Faculty strongly oppose the very notion of boycotting academic institutions. The main and long cherished principle of international scientific and academic communities is that science, the arts and the humanities forge closer ties among people of diverse ethnic origin, religion, sexual preferences and political associations, in their collective pursuit of new knowledge and peaceful coexistence. The violation of this principle is incompatible with long established academic traditions, and should be strongly repudiated. In light of recent votes by two US-based academic associations, American Studies Association and Asian-American Studies Association, to boycott Israeli academic institutions, we endorse the statement issued by University President Wallace D. Loh and Provost Mary Ann Rankin: http://www.president.umd.edu/statements/campus_message2013_12_22.cfm opposing the boycott.
