University of Birmingham car parking

The cutting of parking spaces is not a sustainable solution. There is now much more parking in Selly Oak, on roads which used to be relatively clear. The University's insufficient provision of on-site parking is directly affecting nearby residents.

I arrive at or before 8am every day and don't usually struggle to park at this time however, I am required to go out to schools, colleges, other universities and businesses during the working day and on return, I can never find a parking space! I have previously spent 90 minutes of a working day driving across the campus hopelessly trying to park my car before eventually leaving it in a disabled bay and praying I don't get a ticket. I should not have to make up this time at the end of the working day as I arrive at 8am so that I can leave at a reasonable hour ahead of my 40 mile commute home but having missed so much work time driving around, I usually need to stay late to 'catch up'. The traffic into the University is stressful enough; please don't burden hardworking staff with parking issues!

The lack of parking is adding to the stress of commuting to work and it is particular tough for staff who start work after 9am. It is also a nightmare for visitors who have business on campus or are visiting public facilities, such as the Barber Institute. The University needs to address the issue and come up with a solution, eg park and ride for contractors, instead of ignoring it or claiming it is not a problem.

I pay £1 a day to park my car however there is not always a space. My job involves being out and about and if I am returning from a visit I cannot park. I regularly have lots to carry boxes, pull up stands and this makes doing my job very difficult if I cannot park.

Disastger! No space for parking at 9am! How can we start ourteaching at 9.00 or 10.00? Public trancport is not an option for as I don't live in Birmingham and I need a car.

The parking on campus is extremely problematic. I don't live a great distance away but my commute via public transport is unmanageable. My concern also is that there does not appear to be any car parking planned for the new hotel/conference centre and attendees/guests will be asked to use the already over loaded North East car park thereby displacing staff even more. Please consider providing further car parking provision to make us a truly 21st Century campus.

Parking is a problem for those that start work after 8:30am. There are no spaces available and it takes so much time driving around to find a space. People are having to make up their time by working over, when it is not their fault.

I also use the Gym, staff are not allowed the 2 free hours which other members receive, having a back problems makes it difficult to carry heavy bags from one side of campus to another!!

I am fortunate that start I start work early or car share, It is noticeable how much traffic/congestion is increasing and the lack of car parking spaces compounds this, especially for those not on public transport routes or with accessibility issues. Have the university not given any consideration to setting up a 'park and ride' scheme? It could be operated in conjunction with the hospitals and research park. I only live 3 miles away and when walking around my local estate would say at least 50% of cars have uob or hospital permits. It is more cost effective to drive as public transport costs are extortionate for those on lower salaries. If there was an incentive to use such a scheme (as I have used in other cities I have lived) this could reduce congestion, car parking issues and help with promoting the university as a green employer. Just a thought!

car parking is appalling, I have been fined 4 times. and paying £1 a day for car parking. it is very annoying especially has contractors are taking up a lot of the spaces.

Parking on the main campus has always been a problem; it's just got bigger is all.

I have school age children and find it difficult to find parking when I come to work after the school run.

the fact that senior managers get free, dedicated, guaranteed spaces even when they are not in really rubs it in for all other members of staff, who simply have to struggle and manage whilst they are not believed when they complain about the situation

I walk to work, but this has an impact on invited speakers etc, and most other staff.

University of Birmingham please give your hard working staff who without us you would n't have the high ratings in "The Times" the respect we deserve. I have caring responsibilities in the mornings so arrive at 9am, I am then made to drive round for 20-25 mins to find somewhere to park, then a 10 min walk to my building by which time I am being clocked watched by managers. This is making me very anxious prior to leaving my house in the mornings. I also have to arrange late evening medical appointments for family members as I darent risk having one first thing in the morning as I wouldn't be able to park. I have queried the parking with the car parking people and they have told me that "there is no problem parking as there are plenty of spaces for everyone, you may not be able to park by your building but you will be able to park"..not true!! Maybe I should drive a white van, press the button on the barrier, be let in free of charge and then I can park on the pavement outside Biosceiences and not be late to work and be glared at by my manager, who is in 8am and has no problem parking. I do not live on a public transport route that fits in with my caring duties, and I need to be able to leave if I have an urgent phone call. On open days, the multi story car park is full by 9am!! with visitors trying to park. it is a disgrace that we are encouragaing people to study /work here yet when they visit they can't park themselves and listen to us staff rant about how poor they treat us. In the munrow sports centre, the builders vans, (which they have a compound to park in) take up more than one space, even when the space next to them is empty you can get in as they have their doors open while they have their coffee break. If I were to park over the white lines or in the yellow hashed area I would get a ticket, yet the builders seem to be exempt from penalty charges and from paying to park in the first place. The stress people undertake to come to work in immense! With that said, the UoB doesn't help matters by piling on more pressure when people are attempting to drive erratically trying to find "the last space"! What kind of mind set is this creating for a working environment? The only way the UoB creates additional car parking spaces is when the people making the decisions find their name-allocated spaces taken by contractors, staff, visitors and/or academics!

I arrive at 8.15 in order to get a space, if you arrive after 8.30 the car park is very full. Those who have to drop children off at school have trouble finding anywhere to park at all!

Car parking urgently needs addressing!

I arrive between 07:00 and 08:00 to give me a chance of a parking space and often "contactor vans" , (who are not paying to park), but coming to work!! have taken many of the spaces. Parking tickets are issued without warning even if people are just collecting exam scripts etc. Parking is made available to outsiders for the new building events but not UoB staff.

It already takes me 1-1.5 hours to drive to work. I'm now having to spend another 30-45 minutes driving around trying to find a space. It's hardly in keeping with the university's supposed sustainable travel policy for me to be belching out even more pollutants just because the university can't provide adequate parking for the staff it employs.
