University of Birmingham car parking

This is more disgusting discrimination against car drivers.

Not everyone is able to take public transport, and have no alternative other than driving to work. Lack of parking is an obstacle to flexible working.

After my commute and nursery run I am currently lucky if I get a place on the 5th floor of the multi-story. Being pregnant I'm shattered by the time I get into work and even worse in the evening climbing those stairs! Then the unthinkable happened last week and I couldn't park anywhere. Could really do without the stress.

Parking is becoming an unbearable start to my every day. I have morning childcare commitments due to this i find myself driving round campus for up to a hour on some days looking for a parking space. Even the multi story car park on Pratchett's road is complexly full. May i add this car park has no lift and i have a heart condition! several flights of stairs when rushing aggravates this. I have had to park off campus on several occasions and walk in, this then makes my evening childcare commitments almost impossible by the time i am at my car i am late to collect my child. All in all the lack of parking is causing a very unpleasantness involvement.

Finding a parking space after 8.30am is a nightmare!

The university clearly recognises there is a problem with parking, otherwise why would a PVC commandeer a space on the arts car park? What should the rest of us do when we can't find a space? Go home?

I have childcare duties and a substantial commute which means I cannot arrive before 10am. Since the start of term this year I can no longer park on campus and have to park in Selly Oak and walk a further 20 mins on top of my 1h commute. I am sure the residents of Selly Oak are not happy about this either.

Hills car park should be opened up to all immediately to relieve a tiny fraction of the car parking issues that we are experiencing. Its only ever half full - it seems completely unfair on those struggling to find a space.

I struggle to park every morning even when I arrive at 8.30am. I often have to look for a car par space for a while and then have at least 10 minute walk to the office which makes me late for 9am meetings and teaching commintments. Due to childcare comminttments I cannot possibly arrive earlier. We definitly need more car park spaces.

The car parking issue has serious repercussions on parents that need to drop children at school. This is against the Athina Swan principles and demands.

Staff who have spent 45 mins driving around trying to find a car parking space will be more stressed, and less likely to do their best work.

The University must realise that staff unable to attend the workplace will have a negative impact on what management cares most about: grant income, publications, teaching quality and student satisfaction.

No longer a member of staff but I have difficulties parking when I visit the University.

We have lost a few parking lots and grown as a university but not enough parking has been built to compensate. It is really impossible to park and because of this many people simply decide to work from home, to the detriment of the working environment.

As a member of the School of Education Department of Teacher Education I have to visit schools during the day, with the acite shortage of parking spaces I now have to park on residential roads in Selly Park/Selly Oak when I get back from a meeting in a school where I often have a parking space reserved for me. The most stressful part of my journey to work is finding a parking space!!!

I am not quite sure what has happened. Always used to be parking in multistory (even if u had to go to top), but now none. Havent been paying attention but i guess they must have closed other carparks on campus. Why not just have built the multistory a few floors higher when they had the chance?

I cycle to work everyday but I can still tell that the university has a general transport problem. At first sight, the campus appears to be a pedestrian area. Far from it, it is full of vehicles. I am not surprised, given how hard it is for people to find parking. With more and more pedestrians on campus, this is bound to get worse for everyone. There already aren't enough spaces to lock bikes as it is, with all the building work disruption.

Fortunately it has been possible for me, in recent months, to switch to arriving before 7.30 am, but I pity those that arrive a little later - can easily be over an hour to find a parking space as people have commented. Also very embarrassing when visitors arrive later in the day! - for example, one speaker had to park in Aldi in Selly Oak and one received a campus parking fine.

Those of us who work shifts can never find a car paring space when we arrive for work either mid morning or late morning depending on whether we are on an evening shift. Once the nights get darker this could become a safety issue for staff who work evenings, if they have to walk alone back to their cars which now have to be parked off campus due to lack of spaces.

Many of the spaces are taken by honorary staff that work at UHB. They choose to use UoB facilities because it is cheaper. Students who park on the staff carparks out of hours i.e. before 9am will take up spaces because they dont move their cars and security do not follow up on issues. We are often not informed of carpark temporary closures which reflects badly on the organisation's approach to staff.
