Raising fees rather than tuition effectively reduces income for graduate students funded by RA's and TA's. I find the indirect method of reducing already minimal income frustrating and would at the very least appreciate more transparency in what the fees are supporting.

Money allocated in a non-transparent fashion is either evidence of bad procedure and/or abuse. The former is (and should be) fixable; the latter is intolerable. We should do what we can to prevent both.

The high percentage of typical grad student TA/RA wages that must be given back to the UA to pay these fees is ridiculous. The 200% increase in fees over the last six years or so suggests to me that the fee increase is not because of normal inflation but that the money is being used to offset other types of university budget shortfalls.
