The OCC has nothing to do with this petition even though Mason Shulman is the class president.

This new phone policy states that only parents/guardians can pick up a phone once it gets confiscated, and if they can't/don't, the phone gets stored in a safe overnight. We understand that phones must be taken during the day, but this goes beyond what the law requires, unfairly punishes students whose parents/guardians can't come to pick up their phone (ex. works, trips, etc.), and creates unequal outcomes. Our phones aren't the schools property, and storing them overnight, after school is highly unethical. Many students need their phones after school for transportation updates, medical needs, emergencies, contact with parents/guardians, etc. This new policy goes beyond enforcing school mandates/rules and creates unfairness towards the students.

  • State guidance allows districts to decide storage and return, and other large districts return devices at the end of the school day. Overnight storage isn't required by the state. Our school stated that if your phone is OUT, it will be confiscated, not if it's in your pocket.
  • The argument from the administration "People were breaking the law and constantly on their phones" explains why the harsh policy was chosen and doesn't mean it's fair, ethical, or the only option. Overnight confiscation and parent only pickup is still an excessive response and consequences should stop once the school day ends and shouldn't depend on parental availability. Plus, kids are getting their phone taken away even when it's just in our pockets and not out, so staff are actively searching for our phones. Kids even listening to music are getting their phones taken even if they just have headphones, AirPods, etc.
  • Alternate phones are available in the school, but they are in public places. A lot of students prefer private phone calls rather than ones heard by school staff.

The goal of this petition is to get rid of the new phone rule which was enacted on Monday, February 2, 2026 by Roslyn High School. By signing this petition you are agreeing to the prior statement.
