Underrepresented Specialties within Hospice & Palliative Medicine : Petition for Special Interest Group (SIG) in AAHPM
1. Name:
Underrepresented Specialties within Hospice & Palliative Medicine
2. Purpose:
Promote increased awareness of and knowledge about primary hospice and palliative medicine to specialties such as emergency medicine, cardiology, general surgery, obstetrics & gynecology, neurology, etc. that contains relatively few HPM advocates within them.
3.Relevance:
Specialty care and non-oncological specialties are increasingly treating patients with advanced illness. Unfortunately access to hospice and palliative care can be uneven and sometimes inadequate. The formation of this SIG group will bring various specialties together to promote the inclusion of hospice and palliative care to patients with advanced stages of non-cancer diagnoses such as heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and dementia.
4. Activities:
Our goal is to help collaborate across specialties to create and broaden awareness through education, campaigns, scholarships, and research activities.
5. Expected Membership:
Estimated membership would be AAHPM members that are from underrepresented specialties such as emergency medicine, general surgery, trauma surgery, cardiology, obstetrics & gynecology, neurology, etc. We expect to raise over 20 to 30 members with hopeful goal over 50 within the first year.
6. Indication of Interest:
We attend to raise signatures via online petitions by email invitation and also paper petitions at annual meetings with the goal of at least 1% AAHPM members who recommend that this Community be formed.
7. Leadership:
Initial presiding chair would be Sangeeta Lamba MD and co-chair Rebecca Goett MD with chair-elect to be elected our first meeting at AAHPM annual meeting for the first one-year term.
What happens after the petition?
Application Process:
Based on the information provided above and number of members indicating interest, the AAHPM Communities Committee will review the application, confirm that the Purpose, Relevance and Activities are not duplicative of currently established AAHPM Communities and if appropriate provide a recommendation of a Special Interest Group or Forum to the Membership & Communities Strategic Coordinating Committee to forward to the Board of Directors for approval. No signatures yet.
