Our UNC colleague, Mary Willingham, has been the target of death threats in retaliation for presenting the results of her research on the educational preparation and experiences of revenue athletes at UNC. The founding principles of our great university—light and liberty—are meaningless without an unwavering commitment to the safety of all members of the university community to express their views. So there can be no doubt about this commitment, as UNC faculty members we call upon Chancellor Folt to affirm immediately and unequivocally that threats of violence are abhorrent, unacceptable, and undermine the very foundations of this university.

The atmosphere on campus remains tense while we wait for an official response regarding the safety of our colleagues. Seeing the level of concern from the community confirms that intimidation has no place in our academic home.

Seeing the overwhelming response from my colleagues proves that we refuse to let fear silence the pursuit of truth on this campus. This momentum shows Chancellor Folt exactly how many of us demand a university culture where safety and open inquiry exist without the shadow of intimidation.

Disgusting behavior. Everyone deserves to feel safe on campus.
Totally ridiculous that she is dealing with this for just doing her job. Speak truth to power Mary!!
She's courageous, and it's a shame when you have to be to speak unpleasant truths.
WHERE IS THE LEADERSHIP? Silence just makes the school look worse.
Mary is one of the most courageous people I know! Any threats against her are unconscionable!
