As much as it would be ideal that every student use their school issued device and it be enough for everything the student needs, issues such as outdated hardware (at least for seniors), lack of compatibility with software (i.e. for programming/science/math classes that need to run code, generate graphs, and run simulators), and the iPad's inability to handle large files such as textbooks prevent this from being the case. To compensate for these growing pains, many students need personal devices to succeed academically (which is probably a great alternative to harassing administration every time a google doc won't load). Removing access to these devices is jeopardizing student success, and as much as the network may struggle to handle the load, allowing students to register a single device (as opposed to a school-issued device) or blocking streaming is preferable. Obviously, the IT department and administration is just trying their best and is not specifically antagonizing students, but with the proximity of college application deadlines and midyears, it would be appreciated that student needs be taken into account when decisions are made.

There are better ways to go about the bandwidth problem; expanding the internet may be expensive, but if you were to enforce rules against video streaming or other bandwidth-intensive activities that might be a more reasonable way to fix the problem. As it stands many students need their non-school devices to acess the internet for some classes and some students, particularly the seniors, are unable to access the school internet from even their school devices. For these reasons we encourage you to remove the ban on non-school devices accessing the wwireless internet.
