Rice has no business lecturing anyone on civil rights. Good work faculty!!

I think that the "very spirit of free expression" and a "commitment to the principles of truth and the common good" is better embodied in Abraham Lincoln's personal observation on one occasion: "I do not like that man. I must get to know him better."
Perhaps some of these faculty members will be courageous enough to overcome their prejudice and get to know Condoleezza Rice better by attending her lecture.

I'm mystified as to why Condoleezza Rice would not be an excellent choice to share "her perspectives on the progress achieved and challenges ahead in efforts to promote civil rights for all Americans" as the lecture advertises.
She grew up in segregated Birmingham, Alabama, witnessed racism and the civil rights clashes firsthand, and rose to be Secretary of State in the White House in addition to an enviable string of accomplishments. She is a distinguished, talented, articulate, and polite women with a fascinating perspective on overcoming racism. I can think of few Americans with a more compelling story.
It is unfortunate that so many U of M faculty members believe that the "spirit of free expression" means not allowing someone they disapprove of to speak. Ironic, that.

Through the many years when Bush Derangement Syndrome raged among euro-weenie leftists, one of the most visible symptoms was the weird totalitarian idea that American politicians who dared to actually win a war with self-proclaimed "guerrilla warriors"MUST have committed warcrimes to do so since otherwise such victory was impossible according to the defeatist's catechism. Followed by the deranged dream that some euro kangaroo court would punish/persecute Mr. Bush for his heresy. Surely there was a codicil to an unratified protocol of the Geneva Conventionsthat made unauthorized victory a crime against humanity.
There wasn't, there isn't and uS law provides for the armed forces to smash their way into any kangaroo courthouse and rescue any uS official kidnappedby the crypto- NAZIs seeking to use an unrecognized "court"to punish them for winning over the beloved mighty muslim, invincible, all-conquoring, ever victorious baby killerswhose boot polish rated four stars in the French Berlitz restaurant guide.American profs who desperately wanted the USA to ;use had best check the internet:Osama is fish-food and the last of the Iraqi thus died whimpering and alone in a Baghdad sewer. 1968 is LONG past, perfesser, and the glory days of your mis-spent youth ain't never coming back again. So ditch the tie-dyed tees and the Nrhru jackets. The Revolution failed-anti-Americanism is out of style since the Great Red Hope imploded and Mighty Mao drowned in the Yang-tse!

Academic freedom isnt just inviting people we agree with. Embarrassing for the university to hide behind these types of objections.
