The Proposal

The Student Government Association's Environmental Committee at University of Massachusetts Amherst is a group of students working to engage the UMass community in efforts to advance environmental sustainability on campus.  We're currently working on an important campaign and we need your support!

We are gathering student support to put a referendum on this year's SGA ballot that, if passed, would add a $5 per semester Student Green Fee.

The money generated by the green fee would go towards funding a variety of sustainability initiatives on campus. Most of these initiatives will be directly related to student involvement, such as student trips, speakers, on-campus sustainability internships, and the campus Eco-Rep program. The money would also be used to fund student-proposed on-campus sustainability projects, so if any of you have ideas about how to make UMass a greener campus, you could propose your idea and receive money to make it happen! A committee composed mainly of students would be charged with allocating green fee funds.

The green fee funds would come from students and would truly benefit students by providing academic, extracurricular, and professional opportunities. Campus sustainability is a rapidly growing movement, and similar fees have been successfully implemented at campuses around the country. With only $5 per semester we could raise more than $100,000 to support making our campus more environmentally and socially responsible. Please sign this petition so that we can get the green fee on the ballot and move one step closer to making this idea a reality. We appreciate your support and thanks for your time.

The Petition [to be signed by UMass undergraduates]

We, the undersigned students of the University of Massachusetts Amherst hereby agree to this student-initiated referendum, which stands to fund and support vital environmental sustainability programs and initiatives in order to enrich the campus as a whole. These projects and programs will be funded by a five-dollar, non-waivable fee that we will incur and will be managed by a committee consisting of both student and administrative representatives.
