TO: Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Department; Michael DiBerardinis, Deputy Mayor for Environmental and Community Resources; Friends of Clark Park; Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell:
I, the undersigned, think Uhuru Flea Markets are highly beneficial for our community and I support continuing monthly markets in Clark Park from April to October in 2013 and beyond. In this economic downturn where at least 40% of Philadelphians live in poverty, the Uhuru Flea Markets play an important role in creating economic opportunities for many small local businesses, and in opening up a resource base for under-served families and independent artists. I appreciate that 100% of the profits from the running of this market support the non-profit African People’s Education & Defense Fund's grassroots, black community-led self-reliance programs promoting health, education and economic development. The markets promote a positive cultural life in West Philadelphia and provide a unique and festive venue for all members of the community to meet, support local vendors and enjoy our community park.

We urge Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Department to continue to permit Uhuru Flea Markets at an affordable and reasonable rate appropriate for these small, community-based events which create economic development for the community & urgently needed income for people who may not be able to find work in this economic downturn.

Uhuru Flea Markets in Clark Park is an economic development project of the 501c3 nonprofit organization The African People's Education and Defense Fund (apedf.org). APEDF, Black Star Industries and Uhuru Solidarity Movement co-sponsor the flea market in West Philadelphia, PA - held monthly from April through October. The Uhuru Flea Markets feature over 75 vendors selling everything from antiques and collectibles, local artists, arts and crafts, furniture and household wares, to bikes, books, jewelry, clothing and great food. Uhuru Flea Markets benefit the social justice, economic development, health and education programs of the African People's Education and Defense Fund - (http://apedf.org) For more information about vending, volunteering, contact 215-387-0919 or email philly_flea@yahoo.com , and check out http://uhurufleamarket.blogspot.com
