UEA staff car park charges are unfair and need to be reviewed

I resent having to pay to come to work. The circumstances of my life - living far from Norwich (miles from a railway station) and having a young family - do not realistically allow me to use any means of transport other than the car. It is by far the quickest,cheapest and most convenient way to get to UEA, and to be taxed for this by my employer is depressing. When driving is a necessity, imposing high charges creates no incentive whatsover to make alternative travel arrangements. It's just unfair.

I live 23 miles away and, therefore, have to use my car. I have to ensure that I am here before 9am, otherwise it is highly likely that I won't be able to park. If there is any delay caused by a traffic accident that means I end up in a traffic jam, I face the added worry of whether there will be a parking plot. If I have a doctor's or dentist appointment in the morning, I have to stay at home until around midday - plots are more likely to be available in the afternoon.

staff are having to get in earlier and earlier to be able to park. public transport links are not adequate to all areas thus not all staff have the option to use this instead of bringing their car to UEA.

I have been complaining relentless to the Transport Manager and Security about parking but getting nowhere and have just been told that "decisions on parkingare usually subject to consutation and are eventually made by the Executive team and it is not in ther current set up possible to make the kinds of decisions I have suggested without going through the processes and procedures" so nothing will happen till next Spring. The suggestions I made were straightforward and easy to implement and don't require a Committee to do something about. If you consult "Car Parking Arrangements at the University (2012)", University Vehicle Regulations (2011) and "UEA Transport Policy - 2010) on the UEA website you can see that many rules which they put in place are being blatently violated. Staff have had enough and UEA are not going out of their way to easy the current parking problems. They have now blocked off one of the entrance barries at the Bluebell Road, when it is actually working with a staff swipe card - why? I've tried it with my campus card twice and it's fine. Are they just being obstructive? If there is some kind of problem, why don't they raise the barrier with security staff in attendance to make sure staff swipe in or a token is issued to stop the current tail backs on Bluebell Road in the morning. This doesn't just affect UEA staff but inconveniences other motorists who just want to drive past UEA to the Fiveways roundabout. It's a scandalous situation, causing frustration and stress to staff who just want to get to work on time to do their jobs. Is this too much to ask? Please contact me if you want me to elaborate on the complaints I have made and sensible suggestions made to ease the situation.

The charges increase and the amount of spaces decrease. Most of the time the barriers are not working properly. The condition of the west carpark is poor. There are numerous potholes. I am a smart share user and these spaces are abused by those that do not share.

I am unable to get to work any other way than by car due to various reasons but on an already low wage, this is very costly.

Stop penalising working parents! Parking frustrations mean that we arrive at work in a negative frame of mind!

I think £1 per day, as it was before, is a reasonable charge per day.

I would happily use a Park and Ride at Thickthorn if it was an option but driving out of my way past UEA to get to Costessey Park and Ride doesn't make any sense. However like others have said, there is also a case that some of us need immediate access to our cars. The assurance to know you can find a place to park on campus if you need to bring your car in is essential.

I understand that few years ago there were plans to build a multistorey car park, with the green payback that we would then build a biomass generator. The latter was built first, and will probably never work. UEA has let us all down, and lied to us in the process. Can you stop trying to pander to the green fanatics and try and run the campus as a proper going concern that has at least some concern for its employees and visitors?

Having been a member of the University for the last 15 years, both as a student and a member of staff I have seen car parking charges change. Firstly, parking on campus was free. Next the University introduced a £1 per day fee. However (and this is an important point) it was only chargeable during semester time. Then the University introduced a staggered increase of fees that were chargeable every day of the year. Presumably Band B is the most common charging bracket across the University so I will use these rates in my examples. From the 1st January 2011 there was an increase in parking from £1 per day to £1.06 as well as an increased number of chargeable days. Roughly calculated, Band B car parking charges rose from ~£149 pa to ~£239.56 pa (In 2010 there were ~149 chargeable days vs. 226 days in 2011). This is an increase of ~60%. From the 1st January 2012 there was an increase in parking from £1.06 per day to £1.26. Roughly calculated, Band B car parking charges rose from ~£239.56 pa to ~£284.76 pa This is an increase of ~19%. From the 1st January 2013 there was an increase in parking from £1.26 per day to £1.46. Roughly calculated, Band B car parking charges will rise from ~£284.76 pa to ~£370.64 pa. This is an increase of ~30%. Given that the University has only given its staff an average pay rise of 0.75% for the last three years; how can the Vice Chancellor justify making a good proportion of its staff poorer, especially during time of recession? Furthering: According to the University’s Facts and Figures webpage, the University employs ~2500 staff. Now, whilst I cannot find the figures for the number of available car parking spaces on campus (including the Blackdale site) I conservatively estimate it to be ~1000. This means the University is currently making ~£370k out of staff alone (and I’ll be very surprised if this isn’t on the conservative side). Where is this money going, what it is subsidising? Each year the carpark charges have gone up i am only part time and have to pay over £30 a month!!!!!!!

The lack of adequate parking is shifting everybody's working pattern to earlier each day due to demand on decreasing spaces. It is unfair that part-time members of staff have to pay full price to park as charges are not worked out on pro-rata salaries.

Charged an exorbitant amount to come into work and park, often the barriers are not working. If I cycle in there are only a few showers/lockers and secure spaces to put bike. Where is all the money being invested into? How should I travel into work?
