Increased charges! Less Spaces! Do you feel cheated?
The University of East Anglia (UEA) has recently increased the amount of money that members of staff have to pay to park their car at work. In doing this UEA have created an unfair system that penalises lower paid members of staff and part time workers.
There is also a shortage of spaces that has been made worse by the closure of 200 spaces at Blackdale.
UEA has made great strides by agreeing to pay the minimum of the living wage to all workers but the changes to car park costs means that many members of staff will now be worse off.
After 4 years of below inflation pay rises UEA staff members are already struggling financially. The parking charge increase is one more cost that no one can afford.
Parking is a problem that will not go away. UNISON want UEA to review all parking charges and to consider the impact the changes have made to all staff members. We then want UEA to introduce a system that is fair and affordable for all. The shortage of available spaces also needs to considered by UEA and a clear, forward thinking, parking strategy must be implemented.
We are asking that all UEA staff members sign this petition to support UNISONs campaign to introduce a fair system for all.

I have been hearing from so many of you who are choosing between buying groceries and paying for the privilege of driving to work. The administration is still quiet but they cannot ignore the people who actually run this institution.

The momentum behind this building concern is undeniable and proves how much these unfair charges are hurting our colleagues. I am heading to the administration offices to show them exactly how many of us refuse to accept this pressure on our paychecks.

Charged an exorbitant amount to come into work and park, often the barriers are not working. If I cycle in there are only a few showers/lockers and secure spaces to put bike. Where is all the money being invested into? How should I travel into work?
I agree the charges should be based on acutal earnings. I work part time (60% over 4 days) so end up paying for 4 full days' parking. I don't mind paying for parking, but feel it should be on a pro-rata basis and you should be able to park!!
I don't even use the car park but as a bus user the ridiculous queues to get in to the car park every morning means staff using public transport are also penalised as the buses can't get in to UEA making many more workers late.
Having to park a 15 minute walk away from the office and still being charged the same amount as others, is unfair, particularly to part-time staff. I find this situation exposes the University's 'Family Friendly' veneer.
The car park charges should be based on grade of employee, why should someone on £15k pay the same as someone on £35? We should not have to pay more for such a poor service, barriers broken, not enough spaces, etc. The UEA is all for Student satisfaction but what about the staff!
I have been working in Engineering for 40 years and never had to pay to park at any previous job. Started work at the UEA nearly 4 years ago, car parking fees were never mentioned in my interview. It was a bit of a shock to have £1,000 /yr taken off my salary. I work on site there is no option for me or any other tech support staff to WFH. So we all get penalised by this ridiculous parking charge.
I agree parking charges are ridiculous and unfair for students complete rip off!

The lack of adequate parking is shifting everybody's working pattern to earlier each day due to demand on decreasing spaces. It is unfair that part-time members of staff have to pay full price to park as charges are not worked out on pro-rata salaries.
