If the newly-formulated plans for a true internationalization and globalization of our campus is to be more than lip-service, we need to preserve the centrality and viability of our most visible and active space dedicated to those goals. We need a clear plan for what will follow the relocation of the Center's services and offices; a plan that specifies its reconstitution in a unified space in the future.

The I Center is a most important segment of the UCSD community. Please do NOT proceed with demolition until a CLEAR plan for continuance of the I Center is known and approved..

It is extremely disturbing to be witnessing the proposed demolition of the International Center, with such a complete disregard for a truly deliberative process and sound planning on finding a suitable place that will house all its functions. I have enjoyed many a wonderful event at the international center and know it plays a vital role in the life of the campus. Please delay destruction of this vital campus resource.

I have made so many international and American local friends here in Int'l Center throughout my entire study. And so has my mom as she has moved here and stays with me. This place and the activities here are so valuable to both international and local scholars and friends. It just shouldn't be gone.

Keep the center in tact until a plan is made for all related advising offices and hospitality programming can move together. California students learn so much from the international population when they are able to interact at the international center.

Indeed, not having identified a space where all the activities can be located is not acceptable. On the one hand there is a push from the Chancellor to have more international activites, on the other hand we kill the Center without discussion with the stakeholders. What gives?

The International Center has proven invaluable to my foreign students and postdocs for decades. UCSD should not lightly disband these services, i.e., silo them to multiple distant places, unless it desires to be counter-productive, our own "Inter-nexit". D. UCSD class of 2013. Former OAP student. Former ISPO student staff (TIL mentor). Former International Cafe attendee. Former IC facility renter.
As I enter the world of international education myself, the International Center was key to my development. Something needs to be done to keep it together and with the same amenities (such as a kitchen and programming space) as before.

I was so frustrated by the whole process of distributing the I-20 form for international student which is basically another passport document for foreign students. It was a total mess: we were informed to first pick it up at the International Center, but I got there and waited along a long queen and only to be told that they could not find everyone's documents. Then I was informed to expect to receive it in mail, and then nothing happened until one week before finals which told us to personally pick it up at the International Center. I then waited a long time to finally got it done. Totally a mess! Can't image what is going to happen without this concrete place.

It is very important to slow down this process and find a place for the International Center to relocate. It has served so many in so many ways and over so many years.

As a faculty member who has been interfacing with graduate students for over four decades, it has been my impression that, as valuable as the International Center has been, it was nevertheless inadequate to the needs of foreign students. That the administration should proceed to remove the existing facility (clearly in need of renovation) without having a fixed process for replacing and improving this facility seems very much against UCSD's interest.

This is a terrible idea! The International center performs many essential functions. We need these to be centralized, and not disappearing off into some black box of an administrative core

The International Center has been an incredibly important and positive entity at UCSD. Its activities and personnel (much of it volunteers) can not be matched if this Center is broken into pieces. It will never be the same again, and that is a crying shame! Among other functions, the International Center is a recognized entity in our efforts to increase diversity at UCSD, and this will now simply be destroyed when the current plan (or rather no plan) goes into effect with the planned demolition!

The International Center (IC) is part of the "secret sauce" that has made UCSD so successful and attractive to our financially strapped California resident undergraduate students who wish to study abroad, as well as for our international faculty, students, international visitors, numerous international post doc fellows and the campus community as a whole.

Being a university with a such a diverse group of students, and especially in these trying times, we stand divided more than ever. I sign this petition with the hope that the resolution will prevent the demolition of this building that will aid and facilitate the exchange of cultural ideas and knowledge.
