UCI Community Calls for Respect and Inclusivity on Campus

I support freedom of speech. I am concerned that the actions of this group cross the line into what they explicitly characterize as a "triggering event". This is not simply speech but an act intended to draw our students into dangerous confrontations. As such it should be considered differently from the expression of opinion, and not given sanction on a campus whose first duty is to the safety of its students.

Not in favor of "censorship" on campus. But this person was here last year and I happened on the line outside the event: it was overwhelmingly off campus people. Later heard about "trouble" apparently based on inadequate security. He's already spoken. This is new event is just a provocation. Move it off campus, at least!

UCI is not the place to enable this continuous slid of smut into the sewer. Please ban this speaker and contribute to uplifting our young people.

Even Glenn Beck recognizes Milo is a bully. Please be more reasonable than Glenn Beck.

I cannot stand for such beliefs and ideas being spread at a college campus. UCI administrators should similarly not stand for this.

I can't believe I still have to protest this s**t

It's pretty depressing that I was debating whether I should hide my name on the signature list (for fear of harassment).

At UCI frats are punished for culturally offensive costumes, yet this man mocks those rules by hosting this event.

As a minority student, the events concerning Mr. Yiannopoulos and the space it creates for like minded individuals to express and openly harass those who do not share their beliefs make me feel uncomfortable, unwanted on the UCI campus, and in a sense of heightened apprehension. Furthermore, the last time Mr. Yiannopoulos had an event on the UCI campus, I was very offended by the rhetoric used publicly to promote the event as if sanctioned by UCI since it was approved for public use. This type of event does not offer an opportunity for diversity, it gives a platform to continue hostility toward female scholars.

I am a minority student. I don't find this funny at all. I feel threatened at UCI and let down by Chancellor Gilman's commitment to this kind of diversity.

While respect for the freedom of speech is important to me, I believe there is a considerable difference between recognizing a legal right to speak freely and facilitating that speech by providing a venue and promotion. The planned speaker has issued forth with claims, calls-to-action, and proposed social gatherings that are imbued with a particular set of values that are not socially neutral. Providing him with the venue to do so is not socially neutral either. UCI should not seek to prevent this person from speaking at another, more appropriate venue, but it should also not endorse his theatrics by providing him with the material support of the campus.
