Ubuntu comes from Zulu philosophy meaning "I am what I am because of who we all are." Ubuntu Theatre is being created by primarily Students of Color at SUNY New Paltz who want to create more diverse knowledge on the theatre arts. The goal is to educate ourselves on issues within our own communities by having workshops, scene studies, and performances that center around the experiences of SOC.What better way for us to reclaim our narratives than creating our own works and telling the stories ourselves? In using the word Ubuntu, we aim to create a community, in which we can all relate, educate, and express ourselves in a strong community.

The administration at SUNY New Paltz can no longer ignore this movement now that our momentum has become undeniable. We are sick of them stalling our progress. This surge in support proves that we are the ones who decide what stories deserve a stage.

As a student at New Paltz, I see no reason why Ubuntu theatre should be denied approved as a club. There's no other club like this on campus and brings more attention to the theatre program here at SUNY New Paltz and broadens the audience of those who look into theater. Please accept them as a club.
Phi Iota Alpha supports this new group on campus. We are sure it will be a great addition on campus!
I'm really excited to be able to experience the educational side of theatre. This club does just that!
UBUNTU Theatre is awesome club. I love the ideas. And I believe that they will promote diversity on campus as well as awareness for underrepresented students.
You can do anything you put your mind to! I can't wait to welcome another theatre group onto the campus <3

This is exactly what our campus needs right now! The theatre department definitely needs more diversity and spaces for students to share their own stories. Hoping this gets approved soon.
