Currently, UBC prohibits smoking within any UBC building or vehicle, and within eight metres of a doorway or bus shelter. This leaves highly populated campus areas such as sidewalks, outside seating areas and parking lots unrestricted. Our aim is to limit smoking to certain strategically placed, covered, designated smoking areas in order to eliminate the risks associated with second hand smoke. This will provide a healthier environment for students and faculty. Designated smoking areas have been in effect at UBC Okanagan's campus, for seven years, with positive results.
