The university is moving THE STUDENT HUB (65 Davies Street) to a new building in Holborn by March NEXT YEAR. (due to cross rail) This was the joint vision agreed by the Students’ Union and University of the new HUB: “A physical place where students can come together as part of a University community to receive help and advice, to work and learn, to exchange ideas and to be inspired, and to socialise and have fun.” After tireless meetings with and reports to the university senior management detailing exactly what students at UAL want in this new building, it has come to light that they simply haven't listened. This is the basics of what we asked for: Large Scale Events Space Enlarged Activities/Sports Studio Space Student Activities Resource Centre Shower and Changing Facilities Mini Gym Student-Led Gallery Flexible learning space Extended Learning Zone Bookable space for students (working/learning/socialising) Ease of access to ALL student facing services (housing/careers/counseling etc) 24 hour access to IT and reprographic facilities We asked for the building to be: Accessible and Inclusive Transport Central We believe the next Student Hub could aspire to be recognised as one of London’s cultural centres, making the absolute most of the space by running events, part time courses, training courses, hosting lecture programmes or even short film festivals. An expansive range of activities would give this building a whole-year-round appeal, the focus of which would be the benefit and education of University of the Arts London students. Here's what's actually happening... They have allocated the Students' Union an office with space for 23 staff members.......and... Oh no wait. THAT’S IT! This isn't even enough space for our current full time staff let alone our 2000+ volunteers who often need to use the office facilities, or any expansion in student activities in the future. What is the point of having a central London Student hub… that isn’t for students We have already compromised on A LOT of things not listed above; and we've accepted that we may have to compromise on some of the things that are listed above. There are some things though that WE WILL NOT compromise on. The Students' Union is calling for more student led galleries and spaces for the UAL student community in all colleges but this central space for all students at UAL is essential to giving us the university experience we deserve. This university is at the bottom of the national student satisfaction survey….why -Because they rarely listen to students or act upon what we say on big issues. As a student at University of the Arts London you have the right to demand better facilities and to demand a better university experience. It’s time to take action- We are done going to these meetings, we’re done wasting our time not being listened to. Make sure your voice is heard. Join the fight.
