We want to express our opposition to HB 28. (Texas) Taking away the Constitutional rights of individuals born in this country directly undermines the spirit in which America was founded. To use the language of the Fourteenth Amendment, Section 1 states:
"All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside."
People that migrate to Texas searching for better opportunities in order to provide for their family should be given an equal and fair chance at a better quality of life. HB 28 proposes that these people should not be able to receive any public assistance such as public schooling and housing. We believe that the rich cultural diversity of Texas is a direct product of immigration. Any person who comes to America with dreams and determination should be given a fair chance to succeed.
The momentum behind this fight is proof that the Texas legislature cannot ignore our constitutional rights forever. These politicians are banking on our silence while they strip away basic humanity but they are dead wrong. We have the numbers now to force them to look us in the eye.
