I am curious why Tumblr isn't more proactive about things like this. Even Twitter makes it possible to claim inactive account names under certain circumstances. Tumblr has the potential to be just as high quality and popular as Twitter. Consider the unnecessary daily drain on resources. Archive the old, if need be. The company can't be less interested than Twitter in supporting its users, can it?

You probably meant this but didn't actually say it, but there should be a minimum length the account has been inactive, probably at least 6 months or a year.Another thought, after say 2 or 3 years the blog will automatically go to the _old URL.

it's like if someone saves a campus computer to himself/herself and not even come back to it when you really need to get a research paper done. ITS RIDICULOUS.

guysi keep urls but thats because they can be used for leverage. lol you guys can find good urls you just have to be creative. i think of great ones that arent taken every single day. you just have to think.

I've come across accounts that have actually been deleted by the users who once owned it and still you cannot get the URL you want because it says Someone has already claimed the username "insert username already claimed here" when the account no longer exists and it's frustrating because I had to literally wait years before I could actually get the username "dazedinsanity" as for others whom have had to wait by the time tumblr finally removes the user completely from their database the bloody username is claimed once again. I save my usernames not gonna deny it but it's only because I plan to randomly use them again and if I KNOW that I am not going to use them any more I always make a post and let my followers know that I am no longer using the following usernames so I am giving them away and people usually inbox me and ask can they use a specific URL if I plan on using it I let them know that I am if not I let them know that I will delete the blog that bares the username they want and then I message them afterwards so that they can quickly grab it before someone else unintentionally does. So the people who are complaining you can always ask the person can you get the username because usually people whom you think are inactive aren't really inactive they just aren't using that specific username atm, some of the users on tumblr are pretty friendly and will gladly let you have a username all you have to do is ask them it's not hard.
