Make New Zealand accelerate their billion trees program
Have you ever thought about what would happen if everyone planted a tree? 7.7 billion trees would be really valuable but we need to go further if we want to save our planet.
If we can get New Zealand to accelerate their program by going further to encourage people to plant trees, or try get people to volunteer to plant trees.
Though to do this properly, we need a good setup. If we just plant trees in any random area it can lead to biodiversity loss, and it can reduce the density of carbon rich soil, releasing more carbon then we are removing in the first place.
The problem we are facing is that too many trees are cut down, which is slowing down our progress to removing the carbon for good. Trees are cut down to fuel old furnace type appliances, land, resources, agriculture, and many other reasons. Because of this we desperately need to start planting more to overshadow the rate they are being cut down.
It is however important that the right type of trees are planted to help climate change, it has to be strategic. Broadleaved species – such as oak, beech and maple – are best because they have a larger surface area of leaves which generates more photosynthesis. A single silver maple can take in an average of 400 pounds of carbon dioxide.
With that in mind, we would need to plant a lot of trees if we want to save the planet, around 1.092e+12
