Transparency and Ethical Standards in AI Influencer Marketing
Petition for Transparency and Ethical Standards in AI Influencer Marketing
Protecting Trust in the Digital Influence EconomyPresented by the Canadian Influencers and Content Creators Association (CICCA)
Introduction
The rapid emergence of artificial intelligence is transforming the creator economy. AI-generated influencers, virtual personalities, synthetic voices, and automated content production are increasingly used in advertising, social media communication, and brand partnerships.
While innovation brings new creative opportunities, it also introduces significant risks related to transparency, consumer trust, creator rights, and accountability.
The influence industry is built on authenticity and public trust. Without clear standards, audiences may unknowingly engage with artificial entities presented as human creators, and human creators risk exploitation through unregulated use of their likeness, voice, and creative work.
This petition calls for the establishment of clear transparency and ethical standards governing the use of AI in influencer marketing.
Our PrinciplesWe support innovation and technological progress. However, innovation must coexist with responsibility, fairness, and transparency.
We believe audiences have the right to know who or what is communicating with them.
Our RequestsWe call upon governments, digital platforms, brands, agencies, and industry stakeholders to adopt the following measures:
1. Mandatory Disclosure of AI-Generated InfluencersAll AI-generated or partially AI-controlled influencers must be clearly and visibly identified as artificial or AI-assisted entities.
Disclosure must be:
- Immediate and easy to understand
- Visible within content, captions, or platform labeling
- Consistent across all platforms
We request safeguards ensuring:
- No use of a creator’s likeness, voice, or identity without explicit consent
- Fair compensation when creator data contributes to AI training or replication
- Legal protection against unauthorized digital cloning or impersonation
Every AI influencer or synthetic persona must have an identifiable responsible entity (company, agency, or operator).
This ensures accountability for:
- misinformation
- harmful content
- advertising compliance violations
Brands and agencies must disclose when campaigns involve AI-generated personalities or synthetic endorsements.
Consumers must never be unknowingly influenced by artificial personas designed to simulate human authenticity.
5. Platform-Level StandardsSocial media platforms should implement:
- standardized AI Influencer labels
- verification systems distinguishing human and artificial creators
- reporting mechanisms for deceptive AI use
We urge policymakers to recognize that transparency is essential to maintaining trust in digital communication, media ecosystems, and democratic discourse.
Our CommitmentCICCA supports responsible innovation and collaboration between creators, technology companies, brands, regulators, and the public.
This petition does not oppose artificial intelligence. It advocates for ethical adoption that protects audiences, creators, and the long-term sustainability of the influence industry.
Call to ActionWe invite creators, agencies, brands, institutions, policymakers, and citizens worldwide to support transparent and ethical standards for AI-driven influence.
Together, we can ensure that innovation strengthens, rather than erodes, trust online.
