Wij, studenten LUCA School of Arts, zijn ongerust over de toekomst van onze opleiding.

Vanwege de onontkoombare besparingen opgelegd door de Vlaamse regering, heeft het bestuur van LUCA School of Arts een aantal beslissingen genomen om deze op te vangen.

Zonder enige vorm van dialoog met docenten en studenten kiest het bestuur ervoor om het mes te zetten in het hart van het kunstonderwijs. Sommige docenten worden ontslagen, en veel anderen moeten uren inleveren. Er wordt respectloos met het personeel omgegaan, en de mening van studenten lijkt irrelevant voor het bestuur. Besparingen worden vastgesteld op basis van abstracte parameters gebaseerd op (foutieve) cijfers, zonder daarbij te kijken naar de inhoud en daarmee de kwaliteit van het onderwijs.

Er is duidelijk sprake van een breuk tussen het bestuur en de docenten/studenten. Er wordt informatie achtergehouden en democratie is ver te zoeken. Het bestuur lijkt geen weet te hebben van wat er zich afspeelt in de ateliers.

Wij vragen ons dan ook af hoe het bestuur zal verdergaan met de aangekondigde besparingen. Worden de keuzes weer louter gebaseerd op rendementsdenken, zonder enige toekomstvisie? Verdwijnt de rest van de (praktijk)docenten? En wat gaat er gebeuren met de atelierruimte? Kan er nog kunst worden gedoceerd zonder intensieve praktijkbegeleiding? Blijft de galerie gesloten? Zullen er nog meer beslissingen genomen worden die ingrijpen in het hart van kunstonderwijs, zonder enig inzicht in het curriculum?

Het Faculteits- & Groepsbestuur stelt dat om van LUCA een succesvol project te maken, er sociale rust nodig is. Wij, studenten, stellen juist om van LUCA een succesvol project te maken, er transparantie van beslissingen en plannen nodig is; dat er ruimte moet zijn voor inspraak en democratie en bovenal, dat er een zorgvuldige en kritische benadering moet zijn tot de besparingen, gericht op inhoud en kwaliteit van het onderwijs.

Wij nodigen iedereen uit om deze petitie te tekenen.

Transparency, Democracy and Content.

Dear students, teachers, LUCA-employees and others who are interested,

We, students LUCA School of Arts, are concerned about the future of our education.

To implement the inevitable budget cuts forced on us by the Flemish government, the board of LUCA School of Arts decided to take certain actions.

Without any form of dialogue with teachers and students, the board has decided to cut right into the heart of art education. Some teachers will be fired, and many others have their hours reduced. The staff are being treated without respect, and the opinion of the students seems to be irrelevant to the board. Budget cuts are being implemented on the basis of abstract parameters based on (false) figures, without looking at the content and therefore the quality of education.

There is a clear breach between the board and the teachers/students. Information is being withheld, and there seems to be hardly any form of democracy present. The board seems to have no knowledge of what is going on in the studios.

For this reason, we ask ourselves how the board will react to the upcoming budget cuts. Will their decisions solely be based on “rendementsdenken” (thinking in terms of maximizing profit, focusing on numbers, balancing the books...) without any clear vision for the school’s future? Will the remainder of the (studio) teachers disappear? Can art still be taught without intensive practical support? Will the gallery remain closed? Will decisions again be aimed at the heart of the education of art, without any understanding of the curriculum?

To make LUCA a successful project, the board (“Faculteits- & Groepsbestuur”) claims that it needs a peaceful environment. We, students, propose that, in order to make LUCA a successful project, there needs to be transparency of decisions and plans; that there needs to be room for participation and democracy and above all, that there needs to be a thoughtful and critical approach to the cuts, focussed on content and quality of education.
