Living in a 1st world country means that we have all of our basic human rights upheld, right? What if I told you that wasn't true? The right to be able to go to the washroom is somewhat upheld everywhere. Schools, businesses, and workplaces, but it's not upheld completely. You see, in the day and age we live in, members of our society are finally coming out and accepting who they are. For example, the U.S just legalized same-sex marriage, and Canada has just recently passed a bill (Bill C-16) ensuring that Transgender people's rights are upheld just as well as everybody else. Although Bill C-16 has been passed, not every workplace or school has started to provide Trans people with what they need. The right to go into the washroom that corresponds with their gender is an example. For example, a Transgender boy in high school, who identifies as male, looks male, and is referred to as male, is still forced to use the female washroom. Not only does this confuse the public around him, but it also brings on a sense of gender dysphoria, which can lead to mental health problems. This petition is to be brought to the principal of Bur Oak Secondary School, in hope that he considers allowing the Trans and Non-binary folks at the school to go into their washroom of choice. Please sign to help me in my journey to make our high school more inclusive.
