The first step towards change is awareness. In 2010, Vice President Joe Biden said transgender discrimination is "the civil rights issue of our time", with 700,000 transgender adults making up 0.3% of the United States's population. New Hampshire is the only state that does not have a nondiscrimination law that pertains to gender identity, allowing transgenders to be vulnerable to prejudice. In 2013 21.1% of hate crimes committed according to the FBI were against the LGBT community, and in 2015 the number of transgender people murdered in the United States reached a historic high. New Hampshire has some of the best protection laws in the U.S, except for the transgender community, which is why this petition is for a nondiscrimination law pertaining to gender identity to be put into place in New Hampshire.
