Transgender Bathroom Rights in DG Schools

This should not be controversial. These kids have a hard enough time and do not need to be tortured by adults as well.

I'm a queer alumn of Pierce Downer Elementary and DGN and I feel very strongly that districts 58 and 99 should support the equal rights and safety of trans and queer students. Exploring one's gender identity and expression is intensely personal and can be overwhelming enough on its own without adding a hostile environment into the mix! And if the administrations of districts 58 and 99 do not clearly indicate that students can use the bathroom of the gender with which they identify, a hostile environment is exactly what they'll create. Don't send the message to other students that it's okay to bully, harass and intimidate queer children and teens. I'll add that while I was a "successful" student (student leadership positions, top 1%, went on to Princeton) I didn't feel remotely comfortable while attending your schools only a decade ago to even consider coming out, and I can't describe how positive clear expressions of support from teachers and administration would have been in my life.

Fully support the safety and rights of trans students. Downers Grove schools should keep up with their peers and continue the improvement of access to bathrooms for all students.

Using the restroom is a private matter. Let people do their business where they need to!

schools not supporting transgender kids are teaching other kids to discriminate against and bully them. Please protect children.

it is absolutely deplorable that it's 2017 and we're still fighting for schoolchildren to be able to relieve themselves in peace, without fear. it is NO ONE's business what genitalia anyone else has. i promise you the other kids care a whole hell of a lot less than the bigoted administration of your average school district.

Everyone needs to use the bathroom. Think of how you would feel if there wasn't a safe place for you to go throughout the day.

Everyone deserves dignity and respect.

The petition realizes the inherent worth and individuality of each student. This approach to student equity provides for essential civil rights rather than systematic equality, i.e. all students receive exactly the same. Well-written!

Please continue to follow the Department of Education guidelines under the Obama administration. It's critical for the health and safety of our transgender students.
