The past week has been difficult for all of us. The fatal shooting in Atlanta has left us in shock, in pain, and in tears. We don't feel safe in the country we called home. We're especially worried about the safety of our elders and our children.

Racism against Asians is nothing new. We've been called "ching chang chong" on the street. We've been told to "go back to your country". Asian women are often catcalled and sexually harassed. But in the past year, the situation has escalated and hate crime targeted at Asians rose by nearly 150%. Our elders are being physically attacked on the streets. Shops owned by Asians are vandalized. More than 2/3 of those hate crimes were reported by women. We can no longer be silent. We are Asian Americans, and we belong here.

We demand all levels of governments to step up in their defenses against the surge in anti-Asian violence. We urge local congress men/women and senators to devise comprehensive plans to ensure the physical and mental safety of all Asian Americans. We, Asian Americans, stand together in solidarity with all groups against racism and discrimination. This is the time for those Americans who are in the positions of power to take actions and make changes.

In the meantime, our hearts go out to the victims and the families affected by the hate crimes.
