The Problem:  Illegal sales of tobacco products to Carpinteria teens over the past four years have ranged from 18% to 24%. This means that 1 in 5 teens can buy tobacco products in local stores. Other communities across the state, including Santa Barbara County, have used Tobacco Retailer Licensing with penalities for retailers for illegal sales to youth as an effective mechanism to help reduce sales.

Your signature on this petition asks local policy makers to do the following:
  • Make tobacco products and paraphernalia as inaccessible to minors as possible.
  • Prevent early onset of tobacco use, in turn reducing its negative health and social impacts.
  • Increase penalties for local business owners who profit from selling to youth under 18.
  • Hold owners, not just clerks, accountable for the sale of this age-restricted product.
