Tobacco-Free Housing on Okinawa Military Installations
In accordance with Air Force Instruction 40-102, we the below signees request that local housing policy incorporate the mandatory requirements regarding tobacco-free living as set forth in AFI 40-102. Specifically, “Government-owned, -leased, -managed family housing facilities will be designated smoke-free where there is a common air-handling unit. . . . if STS [secondhand smoke] seeps from a smoking unit to a non-smoking unit, the Installation Commander is authorized to designate the involved units as smoke-free.” AFI 40-102, section 3.3.4.2. Furthermore, designated tobacco use areas must be located more than “50 feet from building entrances, pedestrian walkways, parking lots, [and] dining areas (e.g. outdoor patios).” AFI 40-102, section 3.3.1.1. Smoking on the balconies of the tower apartments creates a serious health hazard for families living in the towers due to the secondhand smoke blowing onto other balconies and seeping into apartments through the doors and windows.
