Dear Dr. Montague.
According to the Bachelor of Science Undergraduate Nursing Program Student Handbook Academic Year 2014-2015:
To qualify for the degree, Bachelor of Science BS, from the Nursing Program and be eligible to sit for the National Licensing Exam (NCLEX) every student must have:
§ Successfully completed the course requirements including professional, basic science, social science, and elective courses.
§ Achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5
§ Completed the last 30 credits of the program must be earned in residence
§ Passed the Senior Comprehensive Exam
§ Coursework should be completed within 4 years
The Senior Comprehensive Exam (or HESI Exit Exam) has a national average of 850, yet the MSU Nursing Program requires a passing score of 900. Today, 7 students passed the exam on the second--and last-- attempt, while another 8 passed during the initial exam in April. This leaves more than half the class unable to graduate from the university, many of which met the national HESI average of 850. Please assist with this change (a figure of 900 to 850 which is NOT indicated in the handbook) so that the hard work of many students does not go unnoticed.

Jasmin your are very deserving of your Nursing Degree. You have obtained many scholarships related to your academic performance. The HESI examination scores are not a predictor of student success. Therefore Morgan State University needs to take a closer look regarding the use of the HESI examination. The President, Deans and Administrators needs to be accountable for students academic success. What plans are being implemented for students success? Everyone please research the reliability and validity of HESI scores as a predictor of students success. I'm very disappointed that an HBCU like MSU is not able to prepare students to successfully complete the exam. A high failure rate suggests students were not adequately prepared by the university. High standards are admirable but you cannot hold students accountable for a standard that was not communicated in advance. If students were not told that 900 would be a passing score on the exit exam, they cannot be denied the opportunity to complete the program and graduate. What about students who did not pass for a second time? What pathways to graduation exist for them?
I am a honor student. I have a 3.2 GPA. I am An out of state student from Atlantic City, New Jersey. I worked very hard these last 5 years. I scored an 866 on the Hesi Exit Exam and I believe I deserve to graduate and take the NCLEX to ultimately become a nurse
The National average passing rate for Nursing students is 76%. Most schools with exit exams passing scores are between 800 & 850. The 900 that is required by your Nursing Department seems unattainable by most students. Therefore, failing students based on unattainable goals seems that this was just a random number selected and not carefully thought out. I urge all of you, Mr. President, Dean of Academic affairs and others to take a close look at your students success. Students should not be thrown along the wayside at the end of their studies. It does not reflect sound academic judgment. Moreover, this decision is crude and ruthless and does not give hope to these young individuals. Your standards are very high and I applaud you for that, however, think about the lives and the economic impact this decision has on each student and their poor families. Policies were made and in the same token policies need to be revised inorder to make right. Again I must say that all parents and families are equally appalled by the above policy. The HESI exam is by no means a great predictor of students success or failure in the NCLEX examination. There is no raw data analysis to substantiate this.

Do not think that your practices will go unnoticed, ultimately this will impact future students enrolling in the nursing program/ school.
