In the midst of turmoil the parents, extended family and the general public were exposed to lazy and inexplicable words from someone behind a desk whose motive was to fill a column with words. The paper not only filled it with words but in the process ADDED to the hurt felt by many. When crisis hits any sector or nation the last, and within normal journalism practice, act is to NOT add additional hurt. The New York Times was less sincere when they spouted a "minimal" apology if that's what you could call it. Being in Ireland we relied on journalists to inform us of the real tragedy and the how the events unfolded. We were served with a profusely poor and what could be described as a "gutter press" piece. Their usual high standards left them and seemingly since posting the article, there remains a poor standard. Remove the piece, own up to the hurt caused and apologise not to me but the Families involved.

This article was another arrow to the heart of those already grieving the deaths of their loved ones. The removal of this article would, for a little while at least, renew my hope that common decency is still to be found somewhere in this troubled planet of ours.

Make something good come from this tragedy and explore the positive experiences that young Irish adults get from the J1 participants. I know some of the people that fell on Tuesday and I can say without reservation that your characterisation was inaccurate and unhelpful in understanding why the accident happened.

The non apology compounded the insult to our grieving nation . Who are very proud of our brave young people . We know who these kids are and what they are made of . You have shown your distain by stereotyping our youth and your timing made sure we all heard it loud and clear . We have the ability to laugh at ourselves and maybe that's why we haven't spoken out before about the ridiculous perception of our small but rich nation . Rich in a sense that might not be understood in the context of the success obsessed, dollar ,chasing , slave labour disguised as work ethic values promoted in your Media . All respect is now lost for your shabby brand that poses as a news agency .
