For my active citizenship in Welshbacc, I am focusing on reduced inequality- gender identity. i am creating this petition “to convert single- gendered bathrooms to gender neutral ones, to further improve the inclusivity within the college, as well as decrease the distance from classroom to bathroom for students.”I would like to try and achieve over 120 signatures/ responses across campus from teachers and students. I am creating this petition because I want to get enough votes and opinions on this issue to proceed onward on changing it for the better. I believe that issues regarding bathrooms are a big issue within not only the LGBT community, but as an issue overall for all students, perhaps some students prefer using gender- neutral bathrooms as they are more private; such as the ones by reception, or it just saves overall time and distance from location to bathroom. By taking action on this issue, this may also benefit not only students, but staff as well. I want this campus to advance the inclusivity that is already in place furthermore. I have been informed in an informal conversation that the bathrooms look like prison. I have also been informed by multiple people that the distance between the classroom and the bathrooms are too far. People have also experienced discrimination in public from going in bathrooms that don't suit the appearance of the person. And reports have shown that 41% of trans people in the UK have experienced hate crimes incidents due to their gender orientation. 60% of trans people avoid using public bathrooms in fear of confrontation, and instead choose to “hold it in '' which causes major health issues such as UTI’s (urinary tract infection) as bacteria is likely to sit inside the bladder as it is not emptied frequently enough.
