We are writing this in light of a recent issue that has come to the attention of the student body of St. Paul's School for Girls. SPSG is known to have an athletic program that reaches a wide variety of sports and to have excellent participation from it's students. Most girls see themselves as physically fit and truly enjoy the sports that they play. Most students play more than one sport a year in order to maintain their physical health. For these reasons, we believe that a mandatory full year physical education class is unnecessary and will have negative effects on the students of St. Paul's School for Girls. Some of the impacts on the students will be that PSAT is no longer offered throughout the school year as it used to be, sophomores will not have a free period to reiterate what they have learned throughout the day, and if they do want that free, they will have to drop an art. Which leads to another issue because making physical education a mandatory course and arts remaining an elective can be percieved that the school puts physical education before arts. Additionally, no longer accepting dance as an athletic credit further validates that perception. As a whole, a mandatory full year physical education class puts at risk our success in other classes as well as the schools ability to nurture well rounded young women. To solve this predicament, we would like to return to taking a health class for a semester and taking a PSAT class for the other semester. We would like dance to still be counted as an athletic credit because you must be physically fit to dance and dancing is a sport. Lastly, because physical education teachers have been hired, we ask that the class become an elective or mandatory for one semester. These are our requests and we ask that they be heard, evaluated , and discussed.
