Rebuilding the 35W Bridge: Let\'s Get It Right!
We the community and visitors to the East and West banks of downtown Minneapolis urge MnDOT and the political leadership at all levels to slow down and do some planning to ensure that they \"build the right bridge\" over the river where 35W collapsed. It is likely that this new bridge will serve our community well into the 21st century. When construction starts, it will go quickly, so let\'s get the plan right! We believe that the new bridge should include the following: 1. The bridge should accommodate future light rail transit 2. The bridge should be a signature bridge, worthy of its location in the revitalized central riverfront of downtown Minneapolis 3. The bridge could be a memorial to those killed or injured and to those who selflessly helped those in need We believe that if MnDOT were to incorporate these opportunities into its planning process for the 35W bridge it would discover efficiencies and cost savings that will add great value to our community and state of Minnesota. Please don\'t let us all look back in 10 years and talk about a \"missed opportunity\"--The bridge collapse was tragic enough! To accomplish these goals we urge MnDOT to meet together with Minneapolis Mayor Rybak and community leaders from the East and West banks of the river in the days ahead to explore these and other planning and design alternatives.
